2010 Season
Skyview falls to Skyline in the consolation finals
From Paul Danzer, The Columbian
LAKEWOOD — A couple of breaks went the other way. A couple of set pieces ended up in the Skyview net on Saturday.
Against the girls soccer team ranked No. 1 in the nation entering this weekend, that combination was too much for the Storm to overcome in Saturday’s Class 4A third-place match at Harry Lang Stadium.
Skyline of Sammamish scored off a free kick early in the match and from a corner kick early in the second half, then withstood a strong Storm surge to win 2-1.
Sheaffer Skadsen scored for the second day in a row for Skyview. She finished off a cross from Brittany Wilson to pull the Storm within a goal with just less than 20 minutes remaining.
The fourth-place finish was the best for a Skyview team, and equaled the best for a girls soccer team from Clark County at the top classification. Skyline (19-1) won the previous two 4A state titles, but was knocked off 1-0 by Tahoma of Covington in Friday’s semifinals.
Skyview, too, had to shake off disappointment. The Storm lost a nine-round tiebreaker to Kentwood late Friday to fall into the third-place game.
“Last night was really emotional,” senior forward Illeana Zaballa said, admitting that there were a lot of tears Friday night. “It’s disappointing. I feel like PKs don’t really define who’s the winner and who’s the loser. It’s just luck of the draw, and who can overcome the mental (pressure).”
Coming off that emotional semifinal loss on, it took a while for Skyview to warm to the challenge of playing top-rated Skyline in a physical match for third place.
The Spartans, though, seemed eager to put their disappointment behind them.
They scored on a free kick less than four minutes into the match.
Skyview, playing into a gusty cold wind, was on its heels for most of the first 40 minutes.
“Today the wind was definitely a factor,” said Skadsen, a junnior who knows several of the Skyline players from Olympic Development Program regional camps.
“We went in (at halftime) and talked and straightened things out,” Skadsen said. “It hit us that this was the last game for our seniors. We really wanted it, and our mentality changed in the second half.”
First, their challenge became more difficult. Jackie Wilson converted off a corner kick from Maddie Christ early in the second half to put Skyline ahead 2-0.
Then the biggest break of the day went Skyline’s way. Skyview’s Wilson put the ball into the goal from close range. After a discussion between the referee and his assistant, they disallowed the goal, ruling that Wilson kicked the ball from the grasp of Skyline goalkeeper Tina Vargas.
Skyview kept pushing to the end.
Skadsen’s screaming shot from the right side of the penalty area that forced Vargas to make a leaping punch save was the best chance to even the score.
“It’s our mentality. It takes us a while,” Skyview coach Darin DeGrande said about his team’s better play after halftime. “But once we get going and get some confidence, and start to believe this is where we belong, we settle down and play well.”
Heartbreak in Lakewood!
From Paul Danzer, The Columbian
LAKEWOOD — The Skyview girls soccer team has been eyeing Skyline for a while.
The Storm will get its shot today at the top-rated team in the nation. It just won’t be on the stage they’d been shooting for.
Kentwood won a penalty-kick shootout late Friday to defeat Skyview in the Class 4A state semifinals at Harry Lang Stadium. The tiebreaker was needed after the teams played to a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes.
The Conquerors won the shootout 8-7 in nine rounds, with Kentwood goalkeeper Courtney Johnson blocking two Skyview kicks.
The result means Skyview will play Skyline at noon today for third place. Tahoma stunned top-ranked Skyline 1-0 in Friday’s other 4A semifinal match.
There was a stunning turn in the Storm’s match as well.
Kentwood dominated the first half and led 1-0. Skyview, playing with the wind and with more confidence, was better after halftime. But the Storm was getting desperate before junior Sheaffer Skadsen’s half-volley from 30 yards tied the match with 2:46 left in the second half.
Skadsen’s shot was a high rainbow that fell just under the crossbar.
“I just popped it over a defender, ran through it, and got whatever I could on it to get it towards the goal,” Skadsen said. “We were running low on time, so everything had to be shoved at the goal at that point.”
The ball came to Skadsen on the left side of midfield after Becca Sikora and Illeana Zaballa combined to win possession.
Skyview hadn’t possessed the ball much in the attacking third as Kentwood dominated the midfield — especially in the first half when it had the wind at its back.
The Conquerors seemed dangerous all night long, but except a terrific individual play by their left back, they couldn’t beat Skyview keeper Hannah Johnson and the Storm defense.
“They were coming in waves and we were kind of taken aback because we weren’t used to (the pace),” senior defender Allie Townsend said. “This is a really high level of soccer and we’re not used to it. We had to come out here and we had to warm up to it. At the end you can tell we got better.”
Skyview coach Darin DeGrande said his team seemed nervous in the first half.
“Halftime didn’t come fast enough for us,” he said.
That’s because 5:30 before the break Kentwood’s Megan McNally made a terrific run up the left sideline, cut to the right near the top of the penalty area and launched a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar on its way into the goal.
Kentwood continued to press the play in the second half, but Skyview was better at matching the Conquerors’ effort over the last 40 minutes of regulation, and the 10 overtime minutes.
“It was a lot more even match in the second half.” DeGrande noted. “We asked the girls to keep playing for 80 minutes and they did that.”
“We were out there playing hard. We knew we had a chance. Sheaffer just took that one last little reach and it was like a miracle when it went in the goal.”
At that point, it seemed the magic might be on Skyview’s sideline.
But in the shootout, it turned out to be Kentwood’s night. Kentwood made eight of nine kicks. Skyview made seven of nine.
Skyview’s Johnson extended the tiebreaker past five rounds with a diving save in the fifth round.
The Storm led only once during the tense shootout.
Skadsen wasn’t allowed to shoot during the shootout because she had problems related to her diabetes at the end of the second overtime.
Both she and coach DeGrande said it was probably best that the trainer didn’t allow her to shoot.
It was a tough way to see a championship dream end. But, the Storm will get their shot at Skyline.
“Our goal was to play Skyline this year,” Townsend said. “We get to play them anyway, so I think we’re going to play a good game tomorrow (Saturday).”
Final Four!!!
What a game. Words cannot describe the action. In the second overtime Sheaffer Skadsen scored on an assist from Brittany Wilson. Game Over! Bring on Kentwood.
From the Seattle Times
After more than 87 minutes of scoreless soccer, Sheaffer Skadsen collected a corner kick and knocked the ball into the back of the net to push Skyview of Vancouver over Snohomish and into the Class 4A girls soccer state semifinals.
The golden goal with 2:41 remaining in the second overtime for Skyview (15-1-3) ended the season for Snohomish (15-6).
Both teams had plenty of chances before Skadsen collected Brittany Wilson's corner kick and shot the ball just over the outstretched hands of Snohomish goaltender Melissa Dreves.
Skadsen, a junior forward who has already made a verbal commitment to play at Arizona as a defender, had one shot hit the post in the first half and just missed several other chances as Skyview applied constant pressure in the second half.
"Their keeper made some good saves, so it was starting to get frustrating for us," Skadsen said. "We just had to keep our heads up and convert and that's what we did. That's the way soccer goes. You just have to keep working until it goes in. The goal was just a great ball crossing by Brittany Wilson and I was just there to clean it up on the far post."
Skadsen, who also scored in Skyview's 1-0 win over Eastlake in the first round, ended this one with the Storm's 10th shot on goal of the game. Snohomish had eight shots, but all were turned aside by Hannah Johnson, who collected her second straight shutout in the playoffs.
"It was not what we were expecting," Snohomish coach April VanAssche said, "but their goalkeeper was very strong and had some one-handed saves in the first part of the game that were just amazing. It's frustrating to take shots that should go in and don't. That's just the way soccer goes, but our forwards stayed with it and kept working hard and I'm very proud of them."
Snohomish senior midfielder Courtney Brown summed up the effort by the Panthers.
"We played well, we just couldn't finish and capitalize on our chances," Brown said. "It sucks to go out this way, but it happens. We did everything we could and left it all on the field."
Skadsen, who hit the post in the 26th minute of the first half, has four goals in Skyview's last three wins.
"This is our year," she said. "If everyone comes out hard and plays their best, we really think we have the team to win it all."
Elite Eight!!!
Skyview defeats Eastlake to move on to the final 8
Skyview advances to the second round of the state championship with a win over the #6 ranked Eastlake Wolves. Skyview's goal was scored by Sheaffer Skadsen in the 27th minute of the second half. The Storm's defense rose to the occasion and kept the Wolves offense at bay. Skyview dominated play in the first half keeping Eastlake on their heels. Skyview will now advance to the quarterfinals and will play Snohomish High School on Saturday, time to be determined.
From the Columbian's Paul Valencia
It took 80 minutes of defense, and one timely, clutch goal late in the second half, but the Skyview girls soccer team can proclaim it is the best in the program’s history.
And the journey will continue, as well.
Sheaffer Skadsen scored off an assist from Brittany Wilson in the match’s 69th minute Wednesday at Kiggins Bowl, and the Storm defense did the rest in a 1-0 victory over Eastlake of Sammamish in the first round of the Class 4A state girls soccer playoffs.
It is the first win in the state playoffs for the school, making its first appearance at state since 2002. Skyview will travel to take on Snohomish in the state quarterfinals Saturday.
“We’ve wanted this since the beginning, to be the team to do it,” Skadsen said. “We all knew we could do it, but to apply it and to get it done is just awesome.”
“It’s a huge honor to represent Skyview girls soccer,” freshman defender Emily Dobbin said. “We knew what our job was tonight, and we got it done. It’s a huge accomplishment for our school.”
The first job was to keep the Wolves from scoring. Skyview had more charges deep into opposing territory than Eastlake throughout much of the night, but Eastlake had two quality chances that were crushed by the last line of Skyview’s defense — goalkeeper Hannah Johnson.
She had to dive to her right to stop a one-time shot off the foot of Alexis Guches from about 10 yards out some 10 minutes into the second half. Then she made another crowd-pleasing save 15 minutes later.
“Hannah definitely kept us alive,” Skadsen said.
The Storm went on the attack soon after that last save.
Wilson, who was on the receiving end of a lot of physical contact throughout the match, kept her poise and won a battle for the ball in midfield. Then she found Skadsen.
“She got me a beautiful ball,” Skadsen said. “I took my touch. I did my job. My job is to get the ball in the net, especially when I get a ball like that.”
Still, Skadsen looked surprised when the ball found the net with 11 minutes left in the match. She put her hand over her mouth, as if she could not believe it. Skyview was ahead 1-0 in the closing minutes of a state playoff match.
“I was just so excited,” Skadsen said.
“As we progress,” Dobbin explained, “every goal is more special.”
“We’re not going to have those 4-0 wins anymore,” Skadsen said. “To get that one goal was huge.”
In the first half, Eastlake keeper Emily Suter charged a ball late and collided with Wilson. Suter was whistled for a penalty and also was on the turf for about five minutes with an unknown injury.
Her replacement, Kate Zopolos, saved the free kick. Suter returned on the next stoppage, then made a stellar save on a shot from Wilson — Skyview’s best chance in the first half.
Most of the match was a defensive battle. Dobbin said the Storm benefitted from Eastlake’s own Web site, which featured video highlights of the soccer team.
“They have some You Tube videos we were watching. We wanted to see what we had to do to shut them down,” Dobbin said.
She said it was a little nerve-racking at first, the playoff intensity, the 0-0 game for so long.
“But once you’re out there with the teammates we have, it relaxes you,” she said. “The pressure’s off of you.”
After all, the Skyview Storm knew all along that this was their time, they knew this was their job.
And now, they have made Skyview history.
FINALLY!!!
Skyview defeats Gig Harbor to move on to the final 16
Head coach Darin DeGrande made good on his promise to return the Storm to the state playoffs. It took two seasons but the Storm will return to the big dance this year. Skyview defeated Gig Harbor 4-1 in the #2 seed play-in game. Skyview goals were scored by Shaeffer Skadsen (2), Illie Zaballa, and Cassie Ripley. Assist were recorded by Brittany Wilson, Brynne Silvey, Allie Townsend and Ripley. Once again the defense lead by goalie Hannah Johnson played a great game keeping the Tide at bay for most of the game. The Tides scored their lone goal in the third minute of extended play. Coach DeGrande was able to get many of his players playoff game time in this one.
Next up is a re-match with Eastlake on Tuesday or Wednesday in round one of the state playoffs.
From The Columbian's Paul Valencia
It has been such a long wait for the Skyview girls soccer program to make it back to the state tournament.
That just made it even better for the Storm when this year’s match to qualify for state was over early Saturday afternoon.
Sheaffer Skadsen scored two goals in the first four minutes of the match, the Storm added another one before halftime, and Skyview cruised to a 4-1 victory over Gig Harbor at Kiggins Bowl.
“This was huge for all of us,” Skadsen said. “We knew this was our year to do it.”
The Storm have won the past five Class 4A Greater St. Helens League titles, but they had never been able to advance past this state qualifying match.
Until now.
The Storm will play in the 4A state tournament for the first time since 2002. Skyview will host Eastlake of Sammamish — the team that knocked out the Storm last year in the qualifier — at Kiggins Bowl, most likely on Wednesday.
Skadsen said she and her teammates figured this would be their time after playing so well together the past couple of years.
“We got here and we changed our mentality,” she said. “We’ve got to do it this year.”
Ileanna Zabaella scored later in the first half for a 3-0 lead, and Cassie Ripley found the net to make it 4-0 in the second half.
Gig Harbor scored a late goal to avoid the shutout, but that did not spoil the fun for the Storm.
After the recent history, those first two goals were so much bigger for the Storm than just the 2-0 lead.
“It’s nice. It’s relaxing. It took the weight off our shoulders,” senior Allie Townsend said. “But we had to think that it was zero-zero still.”
That was the discussion at halftime, as well, with a 3-0 lead.
“They have some decent forwards. We just had to shut them down,” Townsend said. “We had to make sure we all still played together.”
Skadsen’s first goal came off a pass from Brittany Wilson.
“It was something we talked about before the game,” Skadsen said. “We wanted to get the first touch, the first shot, the first goal. It was great to be the one who got to finish that.”
She credited the pass, as well.
“She always does a great job of supplying balls for us to finish,” Skadsen said of Wilson.
Same thing for the next assist, which went to Ripley just two minutes later.
“I was still on an adrenaline rush from the first goal. That goal could have been anyone, the pass was so good,” Skadsen said.
Brynne Silvey assisted on Zaballa’s goal, and Townsend got the assist on the final goal.
Goalkeeper Hannah Johnson was not tested much because the Skyview defense was so sound. She ended up with three saves.
Game 15 Skyview Storm vs Evergreen Plainsmen
Skyview wrapped up their 5th consecutive league and 3rd consectuive district title with the 5-0 win over Evergreen. The score at halftime was 0-0. Skyview came out shooting in the second half to score all five goals.
Game 14 Union Titans vs Skyview Storm
Skyview assured it's self the district #1 seed with a 5-2 win over the Union Titans. Skyview is starting to put the offense together as they head to the playoffs. A win over Evergreen on Tuesday would give Skyview the sole title.
Cassie Ripley scored two second-half goals, Sheaffer Skadsen had two goals in the match, and Addie Lies added another as the Storm pulled away from Union for a 5-2 victory.
The win clinched the league title for the Storm, who improved to 7-1-3 in the 4A Greater St. Helens League. Their 27 points are three better than Union with one match to play. Should Union tie the Storm at 27 points, the Storm hold the tiebreaker and are assured of the No. 1 seed.
Brittany Wilson and Ileanna Zaballa each had two assists in Thursday’s win. Hannah Johnson and Brenna Bogle shared time in the net, holding the Titans to two goals.
Game 13 Heritage Timberwolves vs Skyview Storm

The Storm defefence and goal keeper Hannah Johnson recorded the shutout.

Game 6 Skyview Storm vs Evergreen Plainsmen

Game 5 Columbia River Chieftains vs Skyview storm
Skyview continued their unbeaten streak with a win over the 2009 3A State Champs 3-0. This was a slow paced game played on the Clark College grass. Skyview lead at half with a goal by Cassie Ripley. In the second half Brit Wilson followed with two goals.

Both teams scored again to finish with a Skyview 4-3 win. Goals for Skyview were scored by Brittany Wilson, Allie Townsend, Illy Zaballa and Becca Sikora. Assists went ot Brittany Wilson and Shaeffer Skadsen.

Bi/District- The Eastlake Wolves brought the rain with them to the game today. In a down pour that had standing water on the field Eastlake of the KingCo league defeated Skyview 2-0 ending the Storm's season. Eastlake continues on to the state tournament.
District Championship- The district championship game played out the same as the first two meeting between the Storm and Tigers, very physical and a Skyview win. Skyview defeated Battle Ground 3-0 to claim their second District 4 championship in as many years.
From the Columbian's Paul Danzer- BATTLE GROUND — Playing a district championship match two days before the bi-district playoff round might not be the ideal reward for a league champion.
But the Skyview girls soccer team embraced that situation on Thursday.
The 4A Greater St. Helens League champions asserted themselves almost start to finish, demonstrating championship form with a 3-0 win over Battle Ground at District Stadium.
The third win of the season over the Tigers mean the Storm will host Eastlake of Sammamish at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kiggins Bowl. The Tigers will travel to take on Skyline of Sammamish at the same time Saturday.
"They (the Tigers) had nothing to lose tonight," Skyview defender Madison Stumpf said. "We knew there was a lot on the line, because if you win league and you lose districts, it’s not exactly the greatest thing and it kind of diminishes our league (title) to nothing. So we decided to come out and take districts, too."
On a night when rain and wind made controlling the ball difficult, Skyview was the more decisive squad going after loose balls.
The hustling Storm limited Battle Ground’s possession, and turned three take-aways in midfield into quick goals.
The big one was the first one, which was scored by Ileanna Zabella 26 minutes into the match with the Storm playing into a gusty cross-field wind.
"It really started with hard work," said Sheaffer Skadsen, who assisted on Zabella’s goal. "Brittany (Wilson) fought hard to win the ball and squared the ball over to me, and I played it through."
Skadsen scored to make it 2-0 six minutes into the second half. Samantha Miles cut off a Battle Ground clearance and slotted a pass between defenders to give Skadsen a clean run at the goal.
Wilson finished the scoring later in the half, making a long counter-attack charge up the middle of the field as Battle Ground threw players forward in an attempt to score.
"They beat us to the ball every single time," Battle Ground coach JJ Klaus said. "When a team gets to the ball first you’re just playing defense the whole entire time. And they did a great job of taking us out of our game and beating us to the ball."
Battle Ground’s best scoring chance came about 16 minutes after halftime, but Mallory Nickles recovered to make a sliding tackle to deny Cassie Black a certain goal.
The bi-district playoff round is traditionally tough for 4A GSHL teams. But Skyview coach Darin DeGrande said his team can advance on Saturday if the effort remains strong.
"When they work together for 80 minutes, and work hard for those 80 minutes, they can play with anybody," DeGrande said.
G ame #10 The Skyview Storm finished the last game of the season the same way they finished the previous nine games. The Storm defeated the Heritage Timberwolves 3-1 in the final game of league. Cassie Ripley scored the hat trick with assists come from Sami Miles and two fromShaeffer Skadsen

The third Skyview goal was scored by Kelso against themselves. Skyview's defense and mid-field played well against the Lassie's physical assault.
Game #8- Skyview's strong defense and goalie Hannah Johnson recorded another league shut-out with the 2-0 win over Evergreen. This win raps up the GSHL championship for 2009. The Skyview goals were scored by Shaeffer Skadsen (assist Cassie Ripley) and Brittany Wilson (assist Taylor Grove-Helsel). This win improves Skyviews overall record to 11-2-1.
Game #7- What a physical game! Skyview defeats Battle Ground 2-1. This could setup a rematch of the rematch in the District finals. The following is from the Columbian article- Sheafer Skadsen had a goal and an assist in the first half, and the Skyview girls soccer team closed in on a league title with a key win over Battle Ground on Tuesday at Kiggins Bowl. The 2-1 win improves the Storm to 7-0 in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League, and gives them a two-game lead on the second-place Tigers with three league matches left to play. Skadsen scored from a nice assist by Brittany Wilson to give Skyview a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, she assisted on a goal by Ileanna Zaballa. Skyview's defense proved again to very tough to score on. Watch a short video of the crowd at the game.
Game #6- The start of the second round of league looked similar to the beginning of the first. Skyview went to McKenzie Stadium to play the Thunder and came home with a convincing victory 4-0. For the second game in a row the defense of Skyview and the goal keeping of Hannah Johnson and Amy Swearer pitched another shut out. Skyview had a great week scoring 9 goals and and giving up none. The Storms goals were scored by Shaeffer Skadsen (unassisted), Cassandra Ripley (assist Addi Lies), Ripley (assist Brittany Wilson), and Wilson (assist Ripley). Keep up the hard work Storm!!

The defense was able to keep the Tiger offense away from the goal. Amy Swearer records her first shutout of the season. The Skyview goal was scored of a corner kick by Becca Sikora. Shaeffer Skadsen put the ball in on a header.
Game #1 The Storm kicked off the beginning of league with a 4-2 victory of Mt. View. Scoring for the Storm was shared between Brittney, Shaeffer, Cassi and Illie. The score at halftime was 2-1.
Good Pre-Season Storm 3-2-1. Bring on league play.
Game #6-In a defensive battle Skyview and Hockinson ended in a draw 0-0. Skyview out shot the Hawks but could not find the back of the net. After a red card against the Storms defense Hannah Johnson made a great save on Hockinson's PK.
Game #5- The Storm traveled north the the Spudder soccer field to take on Ridgefield HS. Skyview was surprised by the quick Spudder goal that came in the second minute of the game. The Storm settled down and went on the attack. The Skadsen clan combined for a hattrick (Shaeffer 2, Ashton 1). The other two goals were scored by Cassie R. Ridgefield frustrated the Skyview by forcing the Storm offsides many times.
Game #4 For the third game in a row the Storm faced a ranked team from the 3A, this time it was the Union Titans. The result was not to the Storm's liking with a 1-0 loss. This match was played between the 18's for most of the game. Union seemed to have their passing game down better than Skyview this night. On a very late penalty in the first half Union was able to get on the board with a PK.
Game #3- The number three ranked 3A Camas Papermakers came to Kiggin's Bowl for a match-up with the Storm. The word on the street is this one would be physical. The teams did not let the crowd down. On an assist from Cassi Ripley, Schaeffer Skadsen scored in the second minute of the match. That was all the Storm needed. Skyview wins 1-0. Hats off to the Storm defense that held a potent Papermaker offense scoreless.
Hillsboro Jamboree- Skyview took their Varsity and JV to Hillsboro for a three game jambor ee. Both teams played Jesuit, Hillsboro and Seaside. The Varsity finished 2-0-1 and the the JV finished 2-1.
Game #2- The results of game #2 with Prairie did not come out in Skyview's favor, lossing 1-4. The Storm was able to pressure the Falcon's on the ooffensive side but found it hard to find the net. Skyview was able to control the tempo for most of the match. Skyview lone goal came off a corner-kick header by Addie Lies.
Game #1- Skyview defeated their rival to the south the Columbia River Chiefains 2-1 in the first Varsity soccer match of the season. Goals for Skyview were scored by Sami M. and Illy Z. Both goals coming in the second half. The match was delayed an hour while referees could be found. In the J.V. game the Chieftains defeated Skyview 1-0.
